The Broadway Choir

Thursday evenings from 7-8:30pm; Sunday warm-up at 10:15am, 11am service (September-June)

The Broadway Choir begins rehearsing again on Thursday, August 25, 2016 at 7pm.

The adult choir at BUMC sings most Sundays from September to June and usually performs one anthem per week. We have a Christmas concert each year as well as several other special performances/festivals/projects, which in past years have included a carols and readings on All Saints Sunday, a special commissioned work on 9/11 and a recording.

There is no audition process, as we have all types of singers in the group, from those that are still learning about their voices, to those who studied music in college and graduate school. We are looking for folks to make a commitment and have strong regular attendance.

We sing mostly in English, though have done Spanish, Latin, and Zulu in past years. The choir loves singing gospel and spirituals, but is equally at home with modern sacred anthems, musical theater, folk music and works of various other genres.

We rehearse from 7-8:30pm on Thursdays in the sanctuary and meet at 10:15am on Sunday mornings to warm up and prepare for the 11:00am service.

Kaleidoscope Children's Choir

Sunday mornings from 10:15 to 10:55am (September-June)

(Kaleidoscope Choir is open to all children ages 4 through 1st grade including those 3 year olds who will turn four during the school year.)

Founded in March 2009, Kaleidoscope is Broadway's children’s choir. The choir is open to any child; our only age requirement is that all children must turn at least four years old during the school year.

We participate in worship once every eight weeks or so and also lead the occasional drum circle. We hold an annual day-long retreat every August during which we play games, learn fun songs, and have a special time together, apart from our busy Sunday rehearsals.

We encourage children to become singers through the use of vocal warm-ups, stretching, proper breathing and posture, and basic musical concepts - sometimes we even do the Hokey-Pokey.  We empower children to take an active role in worship and worship leadership.

Most importantly, in our “joyful noise”, we want them to learn and claim that they are beloved children of God.

Unique Spirit

Sunday mornings from 10:15 to 10:55am (September-June)

(Unique Spirit is open to all children 2nd grade and up.)

Over the past year, we have been observing all of our singers grow-both musically and physically-and we’ve been thinking of ways in which to meet all of their individual needs. We would like to challenge our older singers with more complex music in a wider range, while providing our younger singers with musical concepts appropriate to their developmental level, and music within their vocal range. We are thrilled to announce the creation of a second choir to achieve these goals: Unique Spirit, a choir of children second grade and up. The singers themselves chose their new name! Kaleidoscope Choir remains an “introductory” choir for our singers who are 4 years old (or turning 4 within the school year) up to the end of first grade. These choirs practice concurrently at the regular Kaleidoscope time: Sundays from 10:15-10:55am, and ALL singers will gather in the Wesley room at 10:15am for warmups each week before we divide to rehearse our separate pieces. With the addition of Julia Puac-Romero to our team of directors, we can continue our Safe Sanctuaries practice of having two adults with each group of singers. Jackie Boyd has allowed us the use of her office (with piano, in the basement) for Unique Spirit.

Directors: Emliy McConnell and Jenn Peterson and Ruthanne Swanson
