Dear Broadway Family,
As I write this, I am also watching the Historic Confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first Black female justice to the Supreme Court. I am reminded that last year Kamala Harris, of Black and Asian heritage was sworn in as the Vice President of the United States of America. Thirteen years ago Barack Obama became the President of this country and made history as the first Black person to be elected to this office. Looking at these facts brings us joy and a sense of accomplishment. We are electing more black and brown people in positions of power and influence than ever before and yet, according to pew research, as of 2022, we have only 6 Hispanic/Latina, 3 African American and 2 Asian American Senators and only 3 persons of color as governors - 1 Asian American, 1 Cherokee, and 1 Hispanic. So, while we celebrate another step forward, let us also remember that we have a long way to go - and we can achieve the diversity we need, when we all recognize that we are all family-in creation. We are connected with one another, and our success and failures are also dependent on the success and failures of one another.
This Sunday we will be reminded of the fact that we cannot survive apart from one another, and will be invited to think of the times when a person or community stood by us and supported us!
We will also be challenged to be that support to another person, identity or community. I invite us to think of that question - particularly in light of people we might feel ‘deserve’ what they get and are a burden to the community.
And remember our plan for the Holy Week:
All these worship services are in person (we do require masks in the building), and will be live-cast on Facebook ONLY. Zoom will NOT be available for these days.
Beloveds, let us continue to remind ourselves of the times when we were helped up and held together by our communities of care, and let us offer the same to all who need our support, love and care. Let us continue to seek who we are called to be at every moment of our lives and remember that we are always good enough for the moment.
Let us continue to pray for one another, care for self, and never feel forced to do anything that is not life giving for us. Let us continue to do our part in making this world a just and safer place for all God’s people! And remember God loves you and so do I, and I look forward to seeing you in worship.
