Dear Broadway Community,
Some of you may have read the book, “Unclobber: Rethinking Our Misuse of the Bible on Homosexuality” by Colby Martin in which Colby unpacks the 6 passages that have traditionally been used by folk against our queer siblings. Even if you have not read the book and have struggled with similar questions, here is your chance!
The author and pastor, Colby Martin will present why LGBTQIA+ affirming Christianity just makes sense on Sunday, August 25th, at 7:00pm at Broadway UMC. We will host an event organized by Urban Village and other neighborhood UM churches. Here is a little more about the event-
“Not an Oxymoron: Why LGBTQ Affirming Christianity Makes Sense
For far too long the Christian church has held to outdated and harmful beliefs about those who identify LGBTQ, using a handful of Bible verses as justification for their discrimination. However, once those few verses are more properly understood, and as you place them into the larger canvas of the story being painted in Scripture, what you find is remarkable: affirming LGBTQ people is clearly in line with what it means to be Christian, not opposed to it!
Join us for an evening with author and pastor, Colby Martin, as he presents why LGBTQ affirming christianity just makes sense.”
Colby has been a pastor for more than 20 years. His first decade took place within the evangelical world he was born and raised in, but the past 12 years have been in post-evangelical, progressive Christian churches and spaces. Beside UnClobber, he has also written The SHIFT: a survival guide for becoming a progressive Christian. Colby continues to advocate for an approach to the Christian faith that is rooted in the Way of Jesus, while also being adaptive to the world we inhabit. As a leading voice in the progressive Christian movement, he believes that keeping an open heart and mind is the key to living a life of love and grace for all.
We hope you will join us and benefit from his presentation and perspective.
Be blessed, and be a blessing to all you meet, and I look forward to seeing you all at church.
