Dear Broadway community,
I can't even believe we are in August. Where have the months gone? In some ways it feels like the last 4 months have just disappeared and in some ways it feels like the longest season of our lives. Seems like a blur.
I pray though, that the experiences we have had in these last 4 months will not fade away from our memories or be blurred by time, but these experiences will shape us and inform our lives in how we show up in the world and in our circles of influence.
As part of that work -- I had decided to learn more about peace circles, so this week I am in a training to learn about the circle process -- in an effort to have tools to handle life situations differently and focus on restoration rather than reprimand. I hope that our schools and legal system will also see the benefit of that process and implement a peaceful approach to situations.
As I was getting ready to write this piece, I heard what seemed like a demonstration going down Broadway, and so I went out to see a group of young African Americans walking down the street with banners and chants. They stopped at the church (to take pictures of our ‘say their name’ wall) which gave me an opportunity to speak to one of the young persons. They are peacefully marching from Milwaukee to Washington! They are out on a month long journey. They brought tears to my eyes and I sent them off with a blessing. I have no doubt in my mind that for them, this season will forever be etched in their memory and for that, they will be a different people. How are you planning on marking this time in your lives, so it doesn’t fade away? What are you doing? How is this time shaping your future? I would love to hear from you. Feel free to email me at pastoralkalyall@gmail.com.
I also plan on taking a couple weeks off this month, for some mental and physical health time. Nothing will change for you. We will have worship and Bible Study on Zoom, as usual. I will rely on my tech team to assist me with that and Kathy Wurster will be available to be reached for pastoral emergencies.
Beloveds -- self care is important! And it is equally important that we make sure that those around us are also safe -- so please be very intentional in what choices we make, wear a mask when we go out, and maintain safe distance. Let us also remember to speak with one another with respect, even if our opinions and beliefs are different. May God give all of us the strength we need for each day. And remember, I am always your partner in justice and in ministry,
