Alka's Angle February 1, 2025

Dear Broadway Community,

I don’t know about you but it seems that I have lived a life or two in these past two weeks. We have been on the edge waiting to hear what the next announcement will be about. And on Thursday morning, amidst everything else, we wake up to the news of the midair collision of a regional jet plane and Black Hawk helicopter, with no possibility of survivors which was confirmed before the day was over. I am unable to fathom the pain that this has caused to many who have lost several members of their families.

The way this tragedy is being used politically is heart-breaking and forces me to realize we have a long road ahead of us where we will need to support one another, hold each other and be present in ways we perhaps have not even imagined yet!

This causes me to think of our dreams, that we named for this year, during worship about two Sundays ago, during the celebration of MLK day. Here is a list of what you all shared:

  • more people get to know Jesus
  • create communities where people can let their guard down and connect
  • that no one goes without healthcare
  • peace around the world
  • people fulfill their God given potential to be good!
  • share resources more generously
  • live a life more committed to faith and service to God
  • live my true dreams
  • make it through the next 4 years
  • listen and try to understand the opposite view
  • care of seniors
  • support UMC resolutions to divest

Friends, as you can see the list includes a wide variety of dreams- from personal to communal, from political to spiritual, from practical to aspirational. I invite you to look at the list closely and see how we can perhaps pick a project or two, for Broadway, and let me know your thoughts.

I do realize that many of you perhaps still feel numb from this week’s developments or have no idea what to make of them, what that might mean for us and how do we continue to be a prophetic witness in the neighborhood, in spite of these changes. We are holding an all church meeting on Sunday, Feb 2nd following worship to create space for us to share our thoughts, our feelings, our fears, share some tools that we have access to, and commit to journeying together through these years.  If you feel you can help with this conversation, please do let me know.

Beloveds- while we do our best to prepare for the days ahead of us, I also do want to remind ourselves that these times also call us to stay grounded and not let anything get to us in a way that paralyses us from caring for ourselves and those around us- so let us all be intentional to check on one another, support one another, remind each other often that we are beloveds, we are precious, that all of us have a right to live and be who we are called to be.

Remember that we are resilient people who will continue to do our best to move forward with courage, compassion, and conviction.

God bless you all and I will see you at church!
