Dear Broadway Community,
For the past several weeks we have been talking about our baptismal vow to ‘resist evil, injustice and oppression’ and I have tried to share opportunities to show up and stand up for justice.
Today I share another opportunity for us to join in an action to support the work of justice. The People’s Union invites us to join in a 24 hour Economic Blackout on Friday, February 28th (from midnight on Feb 27th till midnight on Feb 28th).
This is an effort for the people to reclaim their power, to disrupt the economy, and to remind corporations and banks that they need to pay attention to the power of a common human. Many community organizations, including Afro News support the effort.
To join in this effort, we are invited to not purchase anything, shop on-line, or spend money at major retailers or any non-essential spending, which means you can definitely shop for absolutely necessary essentials, medicines or any other emergency supplies. And, not just on this ‘blackout’ day, but on any day- try to shop local, support small businesses that faithfully serve your community, and spend your money at black owned businesses and restaurants in Chicago.
Beloveds, I also want to remind us that amidst all of these movements and actions, we need to stay grounded and not let anything get to us in a way that paralyses us from caring for ourselves and those around us- so let us all be intentional to check on one another, support one another, remind each other often that we are beloveds, we are precious, that all of us have a right to live and be who we are called to be.
And remember that we are resilient people who will continue to do our best to move forward with courage, compassion, and conviction.
God bless you all and I will see you at church!
