Dear Broadway Community,
We started off at Capitol Hill United Methodist Church with a worship service, then marched to the Capitol where we heard encouraging speakers and then eventually spent time visiting with our elected officials at the Capitol. You are welcome to check out the full report here.
We were able to visit with Rep. Quigley’s staff and deliver our letters and postcards to him. We visited a couple other representatives from districts that other clergy were, but time and time again we heard them say how much they appreciate these meetings and hearing from their constituents because it gives them a sense of where their people stand on issues.
So, today I invite you to another action: to urge our Representative to Pass the Bipartisan FEMA Act (H.R. 4669). The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) mission is to help people before, during, and after disasters by providing financial, logistical, and material support. The agency has been instrumental in supporting communities after disasters since its creation in 1979. Emergency management experts and community stakeholders agree that the agency is in critical need of modernization. As a result of an undeniable increase of natural hazards and climate related disasters, FEMA’s work supporting communities to prepare for and recover from natural disasters is more important than ever.
As United Methodists, we recognize that the impact of climate change is worsening with more frequency and intensity of extreme weather events that lead to natural disasters across the world. Requiring more multilateral help, our United Methodist Social Principles call to work for the dignity and well-being of all people in the world affected by hardship disasters. Our PRAYER FENCE is another tangible witness to our faith and public witness so if you haven’t done yet, please write a prayer on the fabric strip and tie it to the fence.
Beloveds, let us continue to find good in the world during this season of Lent, and remember to be compassionate towards those who find it challenging. Let’s be sure to care for the earth to leave a better and peaceful world for our children and all future generations.
Be well beloveds, and I hope to see you in church soon,
