Alka's Angle January 16, 2026

Dear Broadway Community,

We are in the third week of January. Last year for this week, my enews started with these words, “The ongoing wildfires in California, relentless genocide of Palestinian people, continued climate change, upcoming transfer of power in the political makeup of our country, and much more that our world is experiencing; so much is changing around us, some of which causes a lot of anxiety within us…”

Not much seems to have changed since then, and if anything, it has only been exaggerated. It is necessary for us to commit to mutual aid, to support one another to get through this season, and, to celebrate together. So, here are some things that we are celebrating at Broadway-

  • This Sunday we remember Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We will honor his legacy at church, and in addition, you can attend our NIL Conference celebration that afternoon at 2:30 pm at Trinity UMC, 605 W. Golf Road, Mt. Prospect, or on Monday, January 19th at noon at the Illinois Masonic Hospital chapel.
  • This Sunday is also observed as Human Relations Sunday! We are reminded of our humanity and our connectedness as siblings. To honor that, we will be focusing on a question, “What does religion teach us about humanity and human relations?"  We will hear a response to this from Christian and Muslim perspectives.
  • The following Sunday, Jan 25th we are anticipating a visit from Mayor Brandon Johnson. We hope to have you all in worship that Sunday to welcome, hear and connect with the mayor of our city.

Beloveds, as I have been reminding myself, I remind us all, let us continue to do all we can to be helpful and patient with folk around us. Let us keep doing our best, keep moving forward- resisting evil, injustice and oppression. Let us keep our light of HOPE lit, check on friends and neighbors often, especially those who are vulnerable in any way! Let us continue to be joyful in the midst of challenges, remembering that the challenges come with moments where life’s greatest possibilities can emerge.

So, with renewed commitment- let us continue to walk boldly towards justice, support communities through mutual aid, and do all we can to leave a better and peaceful world for our children and all future generations.

Be well beloveds, and I hope to see you in church soon,
