Alka's Angle January 17, 2025

Dear Broadway Community,

The ongoing wildfires in California, relentless genocide of Palestinian people, continued climate change, upcoming transfer of power in the political makeup of our country, and much more that our world is experiencing; so much is changing around us, some of which causes a lot of anxiety within us. Change, in general, can be hard, and also brings moments where life’s greatest possibilities can emerge.

We will observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day at church on this Sunday, but Monday, the actual day of observance, I am sure will be a challenge for many like me, as we recognize the sharp contrast between the principles espoused by Dr. MLK and those being proposed by the incoming president of the US, on the same day.

I know of many public demonstrations and protests, but, as I said earlier, this change will also be an opportunity for us to emerge as resilient people who will commit to mutual aid and support one another to get through this season.

I will share with you such opportunities through the year. To begin:

  • Register to join From Fear to Belonging, an online prayer vigil to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, from 4-5 pm CT, organized by the General Commission on Religion and Race (GCORR), General Board of Church and Society(GBCS), and El Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministry, in our continued effort to build bridges to a version of MLK's Beloved Community.
  • As people of faith, committed to mutual aid, let us put our faith in action and participate in the relief and recovery work with our financial support to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) resting assured that 100% of your donation will be used in the relief work. You can also make your donation count for Broadway UMC, by choosing that option on the donation page.

I recently came across an email from REIMAGINE that shared 5 reflections that might help us anchor, us as we enter into what might be a whirlwind of emotions for many:

  1. Lean into vulnerability: Let the people in your life see the real you—it’s where true connection begins.
  2. Choose presence over perfection: Life’s richest moments happen when we fully embrace the now.
  3. Amplify joy for others: A simple gesture—a smile, a note, an unexpected kindness—can ripple further than you know.
  4. Keep learning: Whether it’s a skill, a story, or a new way of seeing, growth is the gift we give ourselves and the world.
  5. Just Be: Remind yourself that who you are is already enough. There’s no need to live up to anyone’s expectations.

Beloveds, I hope these offerings will inspire us to prepare for the year/s ahead of us. I know we cannot help everyone and I know that some may not be satisfied by what we can do, but that should not deter us from doing our best- so let us keep doing our best, keep moving forward with courage, compassion, and beloved community.

See you at church!
