Alka's Angle January 21, 2022

Dear Broadway Family,

If you live in Lakeview or have come to our building lately, you probably know of the new place that recently opened across the street from us, on the southwest corner of Broadway and Buckingham. I have to say, when Epic Kitchens was opening, I did not know what to make of it. The concept fascinated Abe and I so we ordered food from there and we were pretty impressed.

Yesterday, Lee, Pip and I went into the place, at their invitation, and were treated not only to a great meal but also got a tour of the space and had conversations with the staff, the General Manager and the owner of the concept. Their mission is to ‘provide hospitality and brand selection’ as they offer ‘a flexible operating platform and strong vision for the future.’

During the season of COVID, as restaurants were struggling to survive, Murad, the owner came up with this concept - to bring several restaurants in one place. The workers at Epic Kitchens are trained by the partner restaurants to prepare their food in the Epic Kitchen, for dine in, pick up or delivery. So, basically two people can order food from 2 different places but pick up/eat from/at the one place - Epic Kitchens.

I love the concept! Not competing with other restaurants in the area, but, thinking outside the box, working with them in a way that helps everyone involved!

I think it is time for churches to also think outside the box and do something creative, if we wish to survive in this ever-changing world. We need to not see one another as our competitors, but dream of ways we can support one another, help one another, and collaborate with each other. God knows there are enough people in Lakeview who do not connect with any religious institution, and perhaps have even been harmed by one.

I invite us to help me dream ways in which we can reach out to the people of Lakeview, invite them into our community, but do this not exclusively for our church or our denomination, but have a broader vision like the Epic Kitchens. I look forward to your suggestions. Feel free to text me at 815-474-6721 or email them to me.

Please do check out Epic Kitchens and order from them; if you wish - you might even get a discount if you mention Broadway UMC. We plan to build on this relationship and look for ways to support each other.

Also remember we are still collecting, for a couple more weeks, new and gently used items for babies and children: diapers, wipes, onesies, PJ’s, socks etc. at church, for Refugee ONE, and “Cradles to Crayons.” You can drop your donations at church or access Cradles to Crayons Amazon wishlist here.

Friends, if there is one thing I have learned during these past 2 years, it is the need for community, and the need to support one another. Let us do all we can to support not only our Broadway community, but anyone we can and whenever we can. Let us do all we can to make this world a better place, not just for us but for everyone who lives now and will come after us. Please stay safe and take good care of yourself.

I will see you in worship.
