Dear Broadway Community,
I sit in my front room this morning, finding it very difficult to write this piece. Honestly I am at a loss of words. The world is in a turmoil. Our country is in a turmoil, and it is only the 9th day in this new year!
So, today I share with you 2 statements — one by our UM Bishops against US actions in Venezuela and a pastoral message by Bishop Plambeck of the Dakota-Minnesota Annual Conferences.
Besides that I want to remind us to continue to keep our light of HOPE lit, check on friends and neighbors often, especially if you think they are vulnerable in any way!
This Sunday we celebrate the baptism of Jesus which also reminds us beloveds, that we are called to RESIST EVIL, INJUSTICE and OPPRESSION in whatever forms they present themselves!
Living into our vow to resist, Holy Covenant UMC and Broadway UMC will also hold a prayer vigil this Sunday, January 11th, at 5pm in our yard! Please share the information with anyone you feel might need to participate.
Beloveds, these are trying times for many. Let us do all we can to be helpful and patient with folk around us. I know we cannot help everyone and I know that some may not be satisfied by what we do, but that should not deter us from doing our best- so let us keep doing our best, keep moving forward and be true to our baptismal covenant of resisting evil, injustice and oppression. As Bishop Plambeck’s reminds us- ‘In this fragile space between tragedy and truth, may we be a people who lament honestly, seek justice humbly, and refuse the lie that violence has the final word. We hold fast to the resurrection promise that love endures and that life, not death, will have the final say.’
With renewed commitment- let us continue to walk boldly towards justice, support communities through mutual aid, and do all we can to leave a better and peaceful world for our children and the future generations.
And again, I hope to see you in church soon,
