Alka's Angle June 13, 2025

Dear Broadway Community,

“It’s a war on our culture. It’s a war on our democracy. It’s a war on our humanity. I am counting on all of Chicago to resist in this moment because, whatever particular vulnerable group is being targeted today, another group will be next. … None of us are immune from this disease.”

Beloveds, these are the words of our Mayor Brandon Johnson, responding to the current reality at hand! He is urging Chicagoans to ‘rise up in this moment’ and support our siblings that are under attack.

This week is also “World Refugee Day,” a day organized by the United Nations, and designed to celebrate and honor the refugees. Beloveds, we are called by God to love, by United Nations to honor and by our governor to stand with our Immigrant siblings.

While our elected officials, Governor Pritzker and Mayor Johnson, among others, we have a responsibility to support them and defend the rights of people to love, to survive and to be care for their families. I hope many of us will be able to join in the actions tomorrow, June 14th. There will also be a “Solidarity with Refugees Rally” on Tuesday, June 17th @ noon at the Daley Plaza.

In a series of actions of resistance, this week also marks JUNETEENTH! You can find a list of events here to commemorate the day and be reminded again that our liberation is dependent on the liberation of all our siblings!

Friends, remember, we as a church can only be as active as you- the members and worshippers make it! I always welcome your ideas and your commitment to facilitate those actions/activities! There are several such plans underway, and I am grateful for those who are willing to give their time- as they are finalized we will share with you. What ideas do you have? Let me know!

May God bless you as you do so, and may you be a blessing to all you meet.

I look forward to seeing you at church.
