Alka's Angle June 16, 2023

Dear Broadway Family,

This is a busy weekend in Lakeview and at Broadway! But before we get into that- in case you didn’t notice the White House recently announced a series of actions to protect our LGBTQIA+ siblings, including a new appointed position within the Department of Education specifically to combat book-banning. Take a moment and join the American Library Association to thank President Biden for fighting the Book Ban.

And now here are all the events happening here this week, that we are participating in or affect us-

  • We have the 2nd Annual Adopt and Shop event tomorrow on Broadway. So, if you are looking for a pet, you may want to stroll down Broadway between Hawthorne and Melrose anytime between 11am and 3pm. We would love if you would stop at church also to say hello to Tami and I.
  • The Chicago PRIDE FEST on June 17-18 th results in street closures so give yourselves some extra time if you drive to church.
  • Speaking of church- remember, this Sunday we begin our Summer Worship in the Yard and Picnic. So make sure you have your sunglasses (yes I am praying for a warmer sunny day) and sunscreen. After worship we will enjoy fellowship with food. Jon will grill for us so we are invited to bring side dishes. We can also use help bringing tables and chairs to the yard- so if a few of you arrive around 10 to help with that, it would be helpful.

The coming week, also marks the anniversary of the day when many African Americans learned for the first time that slavery had been abolished. The emancipation proclamation was signed in 1863 but Texas surrendered to the Union on June 2, 1865. Gordon Granger came to Galveston, TX on June 19, 1865 and issued the proclamation. In 2021, President Biden declared it a public holiday and to honor the day, several Black business owners will set up a market at Gallagher Way in Wrigley Field on Saturday, June 17th. Feel free to join the fun and click here if you wish to know more.

Also remember-

  • The Chicago Coalition of Welcoming Churches (CCWC) has planned a PRIDE Worship for Saturday, June 17th in Hyde Park.
  • Like every year Broadway United Methodist Church will march with the CCWC in the PRIDE PARADE, on Sunday June 25th . The theme for 2023 is “God’s Love Embraces and TRANSforms All.”  We invite EVERYONE to march with us and let the Lakeview community know that Broadway UMC is alive and well and welcomes all God’s people!
  • We are getting ready to start collecting donations for the SCHOOL SUPPLY GIVEAWAY. More information will be shared soon.
  • We continue our fundraiser to get the organ fixed and media upgraded! We invite you to contribute towards the repair (almost $6000) by clicking here to use our donation page. We hope to get the organ repaired as soon as we possibly can.

Beloveds, as people of God, we are called to ‘seek justice, love kindness and walk humbly with our God’ always. May we continue to strive to do our best, be our best and do all we can to leave a livable world for the generations to come, and a safer place for
our generations.

Be blessed beloveds, and I look forward to seeing you in church.
