Dear Broadway Family,
On June 2nd, several local officials gathered near Belmont Rocks for the ground-breaking ceremony for the AIDS Garden in Lakeview. The garden has been in the plans for more than a decade but funding kept delaying the process until now.
When finished, the public garden and memorial in honor of lives lost during the HIV/AIDS crisis of the ’80s and ’90s will feature an educational walk, reflective “healing garden” and grand lawn showcasing the large “Self-Portrait” sculpture by artist Keith Haring, who died of AIDS-related complications in 1990.
I can’t wait for this garden to be completed, and for the public honoring of those whom our society had left to die alone or in obscurity because of the stigma attached to HIV/AIDS in the 80s and 90s. I am also grateful to the life and work of those who have led the way to bring us this far -- not only in society’s acceptance of people who live with HIV/AIDS, but also the acceptance of gay, lesbian, trans and queer people.
What we know as ‘Pride Parade’ now, was started with the Stonewall Uprising in New York City on June 28, 1969. Following a police invasion of a gay club located in Greenwich Village, riots and protests ensued throughout the city. Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera were two trans activists who are credited for throwing the first brick and starting the riots, leading to protests and finally claiming their rightful place in the society -- for themselves and all who come after them.
In this month, as we celebrate PRIDE, let us also remember to honor what was started by Marsha, Sylvia, Keith and many others, and to continue their work by expanding our acceptance of all people -- regardless of any labels or identifications.
Beloved -- it may not always be easy to stand up and speak up for justice, but it is always the right thing to do. So, let us continue to strive to do what is just and most Christ-like. Let us dare to stand against all acts of violence, extend care and support for folks who might be targeted, do all we can to make this world a better place for everyone, and remember, I am always your partner in this work of justice! I look forward to seeing you in worship this Sunday!
