Alka's Angle March 14, 2025

Dear Broadway Community,

Today I want to share with you the following call to action from the National Council of Churches, regarding the House-passed Continuing Resolution (CR). This bill threatens essential programs that support vulnerable populations, and its provisions raise serious concerns. It includes:

  • significant cuts to nutrition assistance, which millions of families rely on to feed their children;
  • reduction in funding for crucial senior services, including healthcare programs such as Alzheimer’s research;
  • threats to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid: that millions of Americans depend on;
  • reduction in healthcare funding for veterans, many of whom suffer from the effects of toxic exposures like Agent Orange and burn pits;
  • cutting taxes for the wealthiest Americans while reducing essential services that working-class families rely on.

As people of faith, we have a responsibility to advocate for those most at risk—especially children, low-income families, veterans, and seniors. Here are things we as people of faith can do:

  • Contact our Senators today and urge them to vote NO on the House-passed Continuing Resolution. Call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 TWICE and ask to be connected to our Senators. Use this sample message “As a person of faith, I urge my senator to vote NO on the House-passed Continuing Resolution. It would harm veterans, children, seniors, and families by cutting vital programs like healthcare, nutrition assistance, and Social Security. These are essential services for millions of Americans. We must protect the most vulnerable.”
  • Email the senators by using this link.
  • Share your concerns with your senators on social media using #VoteNoCR and #FaithForJustice.

Beloveds, amidst all of these movements and actions, let us not forget to care for ourselves and to stay grounded, so nothing gets to us in a way that paralyses us from caring: for ourselves and for those around us. May we all remain intentional in checking on one another, and frequently reminding each other that we are beloveds of the one who created us. May we do our best to move forward with courage, compassion, and conviction.

God bless you all and I will see you at church!
