Alka's Angle May 29, 2019

Dear Broadway Family,

Some of you followed the recent gathering in Minneapolis of people who drafted and supported the Simple Plan. The meeting was called to center the voices of POC+Q+T persons, but allies were welcome and their presence was appreciated. The gathering was to bring together all the POC+Q+T voices to see how we wanted to move forward in this denomination that has clearly lost its focus and vision and even place in many committed Wesleyan people.

What came out of this gathering is this document. I invite you to read it and, if feel called, to sign it as an individual to support the work of this group. If you are not a United Methodist, you can still support the document. I have already signed it as an individual. But, I also desire to support  this document as Broadway church, so, if you want to support that please click here. If I receive 25 or more responses, then I will sign our church’s support for this document.

There many other important pieces of information I need to share with you:

  • Our Northern Illinois Annual Conference has its Annual session from June 2nd- 4th.  On Sunday, June 2nd we will have the ordination service, where Rev. M Barclay will be ordained as a Deacon in full connection. There are many people going to the ordination service which will start at 4:00 pm at the Renaissance Convention Center located at 1551 N Thoreau Dr N, Schaumburg, IL 60173. Paula Roderick will be representing our church at the conference and we hope to get a report back when we return.
  • The month of June is celebrated to the fullest at Broadway. We have uplifting worship planned for us focusing on songs by Cher, Lady Gaga, LP and Abba. On June 9th we will be led by DRAG performers who will speak to us about their faith and their relationship with God. June 9th is also Pentecost Sunday. And, because I will be at Annual Conference on June 2nd, we will celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion on June 9th. June 9th will be a busy day at Broadway. Make sure you tell your friends to join us for worship.
  • June 9th is also Savvy’s last Sunday with us as a student intern. We will have cake and punch, after worship, to celebrate her time with us. Please feel free to bring cards/notes/gifts or anything you desire to share with her.
  • Last year we worshipped in the yard one Sunday a month and had potluck afterwards, that were enjoyed by everyone. This year “Worship in the Yard” will be on the 3rd Sunday of the Month in July, August and September.

Friends, let us continue to do what God has called us to do. Let us strive to be fully ourselves. Let us create spaces where everyone can be fully known and respected. Let us keep sharing the love of God with this hurting world. God bless you and remember, I am always your partner in justice!
