Dear Broadway Community,

I do not like that within 15 days I have to share with you another loss for the Broadway community and the larger world. Fran Markwardt passed into eternal life on Wednesday night. She had chosen cremation so there is no funeral service planned. We will let you know when a memorial service is planned for a celebration of her life.

Fran was a gift to the Broadway community and was an avid learner. She was also a wonderful poet and I remember that she had also learned to rap- some of us were blessed to hear her raps during many church events. I invite us to continue to pray for Fran’s sisters and families as they navigate through all that needs to be taken care of in  the midst of processing their own emotions in time of loss and pain.

This week we enter PRIDE month with the beginning of June! June is going to be filled with different activities for us, so I invite you to pay close attention to our June announcements.

We begin a 3 week sermon series this Sunday on the PRAYER of JESUS, (commonly also known as the Lord’s Prayer), which is interspersed through the month.

So here is the outline for June-

  • June 2 @11:00 am- sermon series at Broadway UMC
  • June 9 @ 10:30 am- we worship at Holy Covenant UMC. (We will get a tour of the building.)
  • June 16 @11:00 am- sermon series at Broadway UMC
  • June 23 @ 11:00 am- sermon series at Broadway UMC with members of Holy Covenant UMC. (We will give a tour of the building.)
  • June 30th has not been finalized yet. We will share info with you as soon as we have a final plan.

If you are wondering why we are worshiping at Holy Covenant UMC- here is a statement that the leadership teams from the two churches have shared-

Did you know there are two phenomenal United Methodist Churches here in Lakeview? Broadway UMC (3338 N Broadway) and Holy Covenant UMC (925 W Diversey), and both have similar visions of an inclusive church with a deep social justice history.

The leadership and pastors met on Saturday, May 11th, to explore how our congregations, with our limited resources, can partner to best serve our neighborhood. As a first step, we plan a joint worship at each location, followed by a tour of the building and an overview of the ministries of that church.

  • June 9th Sunday worship at 10:30 am at Holy Covenant United Methodist Church.
  • June 23rd Sunday worship at 11:00 am at Broadway United Methodist Church.

We hope this will be the beginning of many fruitful and joyful collaborations.

Ideas for further collaboration? Share your idea here!

I hope you will take time to share your thoughts and ideas as we explore these possibilities, and I continue to be grateful for all of you for always showing up in the best way you can, so together we can continue to be the church that God has called us to be.

Be blessed, and be a blessing to all you meet, and I look forward to seeing you all at church.
