Alka's Angle Novmber 30, 2024

Dear Broadway Community,

Beloveds, I trust you had a great time with friends and family- birth or chosen, and I want to take the opportunity to say that I am grateful for each one of you and thank God for blessing the world by your presence. I also pray that you did find some time to rest and relax in the midst of all these gatherings and engagements.

This Sunday we enter into the Advent season, and a new liturgical year. Our 2024 Advent series, “The Inn: Housing the Holy” is prepared by Worship Design Studio, inviting us to become houses where the Holy can be born anew, opening the doors to those seeking shelter from the onslaught of life. I pray that as we study the biblical prophets that call us to care for our neighbors and “make room in the inn,” the lonely and frightened spaces within us are filled with the light of:

Hope          Dec 1            Advent 1 “Making Room”

Peace         Dec 8           Advent 2 “A Place at the Table”

Love           Dec 15          Advent 3 “How Much is Enough?”

Joy             Dec 22          Advent 4 “A Room with a View”

Dec 24          Christmas Eve “The Inn”

Along with these reminders that our faith story is grounded in the presence of God that came and dwelt among us in the midst of hardship, we also acknowledge and remember that sometimes hope, peace, joy, and love are distant feelings, especially when we encounter great loss. The anticipation of renewed grief as Christmas Eve approaches can be difficult to bear for many. To acknowledge that, we will once again hold a “Blue Christmas” service on Sunday, December 22nd at 7:00 pm. As always we pray that you will be able to join us for most, if not all, of these services.

Keeping in line with our commitment to make room for the vulnerable, we are receiving donations of new or gently used winter clothes and blankets for Heartland Human Care services. Please bring your donations to church.

Another way you can share your blessings would be by supporting the work of ‘Kids Above All’ who continue to work towards alleviating suffering, and eradicating causes of injustice- placing the safety, well-being and education of kids above everything else. Here are some ways we can support their work in this season:

  • Donate new, unwrapped toys, games or books for children ages 0-24.
  • Order from their Target or Amazon list.
  • Volunteer in the Toy Room by contacting Catherine @ cinserra@kidsaboveall.org or calling 847 224 2870 to reserve your time. And finally,
  • Make a financial donation to help them fill their financial gap.

And don’t forget that this Sunday, Dec 1st, after worship, at 1:00 pm, we will have our Annual Church Conference in the sanctuary. I pray you will be able to stay for it- to meet our new District Superintendent, Rev. Victor Melad, and learn about the everyday workings of our church in addition to celebrating all that we have been able to do in this past year.

Beloveds, amidst all that life presents us with, let us not forget to walk boldly towards justice, continue to support our community, and do all we can to leave a better and peaceful world for our children and the future generations.

And, I hope to see you in church soon,
