Alka's Angle November 5, 2021

Dear Broadway Family,

As many of you may know, COVID delayed General Conference -- the Quadrennial gathering of United Methodists where all denominational decisions are made. With COVID continuing to spread globally, there is a strong chance that the Conference, scheduled for August-September 2022, may be postponed again, which will leave the denomination in this state of indecision -- the biggest of which is if we can continue to be one denomination or separate amicably so each can fully live into their conviction of who God calls them to be.

Recently, an open letter, “A Call to Grace” was sent to the Council of Bishops. The letter asks the Bishops to ‘develop resources to assist local churches in discerning their future,’ to honor ‘the expressed desire of some churches and church leaders to leave The United Methodist Church and participate in other denominations,’ and 'to hold in abeyance any complaints related to ministry with LGBTQIA+ persons and matters concerning the future direction of the church.’ To read more you can find the article here.

I have signed the letter because I know that while I would not want anyone to leave the denomination, there are some who believe that ordination and marriage is reserved for heterosexual folks only, and therefore do not agree for the denomination to celebrate and affirm the ministry and union of our LGBTQIA+ siblings. I believe that those who think differently have a right to join a denomination (Global Methodist Church is already in the making) that affirms their beliefs. For that reason, I invite you to also sign the open letter, so the Bishops can see what the people in the pews desire.

Now, a few things about this Sunday:

  • We open the building for in-person hybrid worship starting this Sunday, so If you plan to be at church for worship, remember to sign up by using this link. Also remember that masks are required inside the building at all times, doors will open only 15 minutes before worship, and no food or coffee (unless you have your own) for fellowship after worship.
  • Those who plan on staying online, nothing changes for you.
  • This is also All Saints Sunday! We will light a candle for every 100,000 folk that have died of COVID in our country, and light candles for our loved ones who have joined the great cloud of witnesses. Share the name of your saints, if you haven’t already so, by using this link.
  • Daylight Saving ends this Sunday, so be mindful of the time change.

Beloveds, may God continue to bless you, and remember, I am always with you in the work of justice. I look forward to seeing you in worship this Sunday!
