Dear Broadway family,
As we come to the end of this month, here is another message to you from one of our own. Focusing on the ‘Stewardship season,” Satia Orange has chosen to write about why she gives to the church. Here is what she has to say:
Why I Give to Broadway
The proclamation of faith in the first 10 minutes of worship, sealed my decision to make Broadway my church home six years ago. The activist traditions of this congregation are familiar in the faith experiences of my childhood.
I grew up in the Methodist tradition, but in the AME (African Methodist Episcopal) Church. The history of Rev. Richard Allen leading Black congregants from worshipping at a Philadelphia Methodist Episcopal church, where they were subjected to racial intimidation, to found, what is now remembered as “Mother Bethel” in Philly, was as important in my religious experience as the spiritual teachings of Jesus Christ. My parents were active in the leadership of AME churches wherever we were living. Supporting the church as an institution, all in our faith family, and the community were instilled in me as a family practice.
Admittedly I have not been the model congregant in my adult years, usually attending church, but often not accepting the full responsibility of service as my parents. I have, however, depended on my Christian teachings to guide my life decisions, often struggling, yet depending on God’s grace as a life choice. In my work life, I used my expertise and influence to advocate for marginalized folks, including for me and my family. And I continue to grow and learn, even with missteps.
And now, late in life, I value the activism I experience each Sunday worship, each Wednesday at Bible Study, and throughout each week, even virtually. Although I miss the in-person smiles and hugs and greetings, even in this era of COVID 19, I cherish the support folks continue to share with each other, the caring relationships, the individual and collective responses to community issues. Joining in prayers and encouragement for those who are experiencing the traumas of loss, in their named and unnamed life challenges, makes the “Broadway way” a necessary component of my life’s walk. If you’re looking for more meaning to your life, the opportunities are right here in this faith family.
Which is why, soon after joining, I increased my giving from a few dollars in the offering plate each Sunday, to now designated giving each month, to do my part to ensure that our church and all its responsibilities are met and continued. Although I can’t give as much as I’d like, I know that my little giving, added to the giving of others, can hopefully make that difference. Yours can too. ~ Satia Orange
Thank you Satia, Brian and Charolette for your thoughtful and honest contributions.
Friends, even though we are close to the end of October, the end to our COVID life is nowhere in sight! As you may have heard, we have begun to experience resurgence in many parts of our country and even in our state. One source suggests that 1 in every 54 Chicagoans in currently sick and is potentially spreading COVID. What does that mean for us? I don’t know yet, but if, and as soon as we make a decision, we will share with you. We urge you to please take good care of yourselves -- wash your hands, wear your mask and refrain from large crowds.
Also remember, Stewardship Sunday is November 8th.
November 1st -- the first Sunday in November is All Saints Sunday! We will light candles in memory of our loved ones who have gone from among us in this past year. If you lost loved ones this past year and desire for them to be named during worship, please email me their name/s and, if possible, a photo, and we will light a candle for them, in the Sanctuary, on November 1st. Please email them to me at pastoralkalyall@gmail.com.
Also, if you are willing to assist in worship by reading our Centering Words, Opening Prayer, Offering Invitation/Prayer, or Scripture, please sign up here.
Beloveds, I pray that you are doing well, taking good care of yourself, and doing all you can to stay positive. May God give all of us the strength we need for each day. And remember, I am always your partner, in justice and in ministry,
