Alka's Angle September 18, 2020

Dear Broadway Community,

This coming Sunday will be the 28th Sunday of zoom worship! Seasons and celebrations have come and gone, and we have learned to celebrate them differently, to worship differently and to be community differently -- for even though we have not been ‘together’ in the same space like we were used to -- we have been in community. As I said on ‘Broadway Connect’ fb: ‘We may not have gathered AT church, we have been gathering AS church.’ And that is important for all of us to remember. We are a beloved community and we shall remain that -- whatever changes come our way.

Speaking of change -- have you noticed the season is changing? We are almost into fall! In a church calendar that means ‘rally day’ and ‘back to church’ potlucks and preparing for the Church Conference! And these activities happen differently this year! So our zoom Church Conference is scheduled for Monday, October 19, 2020 at 6:30pm. A zoom link will be shared as we get closer but I wanted to get the date on your calendar.

A few other things to remember:

  • I want to bring to your attention a 2020 documentary, A Most Beautiful Thing, that chronicles the first African American high school rowing team in this country (made up of young men, many of whom were in rival gangs from the West Side of Chicago), all coming together to row in the same boat. One Earth Film Festival is sponsoring a free screening and discussion via Zoom on Friday, September 25 from 6:30-9pm. If you are interested, click here to register. Free viewing but registration is required.
  • Our hybrid worship is getting better each week, thanks to our wonderful tech/media team. With their support we will continue to offer zoom, fb-live and in-person worship. However, to make worship meaningful for all, going forward, we will disable chat during worship, except for ‘prayers of the people.’ Please understand this change. We will share a phone number you can send text messages to during worship, if any technical issues need to be addressed. And, thanks to Abe and Robert, we will have some singing added to worship this week.
  • Our building is in use by 1st graders during school hours (8:30am to 3:00pm). We encourage you to NOT be in the building during those hours, and if you need to -- then please follow all safety measures and limit yourself to the office area.
  • Lastly, we are in need of an IT/technician who can help us with our internal networking/hardwiring needs. If you know someone, please share that information with the office.

Beloveds let us all do our part to make this world, our country and our community a better place for all, specially for our black, brown and  transgender siblings. May God give us the strength we need for each day. And remember, I am always your partner in justice and in ministry,
