Mack's Minute December 20, 2019

I’m going to break away from my usual format and ask a question. What is a Sacred Space for you? What does sacred even mean? A quick Google search gives this definition: connected with God or dedicated to a religious purpose and so deserving veneration (great respect or reverence). So a Sacred Space is “connected with God” and “deserving [of] veneration.”

As M said this past Sunday, God uses Mary to bring Jesus into this world. Jesus, God in the flesh, is brought into this world through the flesh and labor pains of Mary. God does this because our bodies are sacred. Our bodies are connected to God and are deserving of veneration.

What other spaces are sacred? For me, my favorite local coffee shop in my hometown is a Sacred Space. It’s the place where I always go to catch up with old friends when I am in town. I feel the presence of God when I am there and in fellowship with my friends. Even if I go there by myself to do homework, I can feel God’s presence. Another Sacred Space for me is my meditation cushion, wherever I happen to use it. Meditating allows me to slow down, clear my head, and focus on God. This cushion helps me to connect to God, and so for me, the cushion itself is connected to God and deserves respect.
