Pip's Perspective November 11, 2022

Hello Broadway Family,

Today, in the US, it is Veteran’s Day. Whether or not we each agree with individual wars or war as concept at all, I think it’s important that we recognize those who have served in the armed forces.

I hail from a proud military family. My Dad served in Vietnam, and my favorite Grandpa was a WW2 officer. If I were to list all my family members who spent time in the forces, it would take awhile. As a kid, I heard about the military from my family and also from MASH and Top Gun. I learned early on that it was honorable and brave to be a soldier.

I think that it’s important to take time to honor those who have served. People go into the military for lots of reasons, top of the list include honor and duty. Being a veteran comes with a lot of sacrifices, not least of which is the risk of experiencing trauma which can have lifelong impacts including upon one’s family. Often our government does not live up to its promises, and veterans live without needed services.

I would like to see us, as a species, learn to live without wars. I feel that, often, leaders enter into wars for the wrong reasons. But I don’t think this takes away from the service veterans have provided.

Today, I invite you to take a moment to think about a veteran in your life. If you feel comfortable and called, consider saying a word of recognition of the work they did.

And as always, take care of yourselves! Enjoy the beautiful fall colors, even if it is a bit chilly. Remember that God calls on us to love one another, and to love ourselves.

Be blessed!
