Alka's Angle April 24, 2026

Dear Broadway Community,

A week from today, will be May 1st, also known as ‘May Day’ and ‘International Workers’ Day,’ celebrating workers and the history of labor organizing. The day is important for working people around the world as it is a significant display of international solidarity and worker power.

This year, a coalition of over 200 organizations is calling on folks to make their economic power known, by making this a national economic day of action and committing to: No work. No school. No shopping. Instead, rallies, marches, and non-violent disruptions are being organized in cities across the country:

  • To tax the rich so our families, not their fortunes, come first,
  • to demand ICE Out and end the private army serving authoritarian power, and
  • to expand democracy, not corporate rule.

Organizers have taken inspiration from the powerful organizing in Minnesota. When ICE began terrorizing the Twin Cities they didn’t just march, they disrupted. Hundreds of businesses shut their doors. Tens of thousands of people did not go to work or school and refused to spend any money. They made it clear they would not continue business as usual while ICE brutalized their neighbors.

Beloveds, showing up matters! We’ve proved that, and we’ll keep proving that. But showing up alone is not enough to stop people who are breaking every rule. Action is necessary! ONE Northside is participating in this May Day action and as members of the organizations we are called to participate also. We can:

Beloveds, this week our sermon series question is, ‘What do you need?’ focusing on relationships that we build with other people and creation. Our participating and showing up for the above actions will be a step towards our response to that question. Hope many of you will be able and willing to participate in this action with me. Let me know and we can go together from the church.

Beloveds let us remain intentional in sharing the LOVE of Jesus with all we can, support all the people we can, remind each other that we are beloveds of the one who created us all, and let us keep moving forward with courage, compassion, and conviction, always finding good in all we see and experience.

God bless you all and I will see you at church!
